About the VizSeek Desktop App

The VizSeek Desktop App makes it easy to get your files from your local or network location to VizSeek so that they can be indexed and searched. You can also schedule syncing on the Desktop App so that your VizSeek account is always up to date with changes you make in your files.

In order to be searchable, a file must be "indexed." For VizSeek, this means that our state-of-the-art indexing algorithm creates a "shape signature" of your file, and it is the shape signature that is used for searching.

There are two versions of the VizSeek Desktop App, and the difference between them is how they handle indexing:

Server-side Indexing only

With server-side indexing, copies of your files are transferred and synced to VizSeek’s servers. VizSeek performs indexing and keeps your original file plus the indexed "shape signature" file on VizSeek servers. This version is "lighter weight" since all the indexing is happening on VizSeek servers, but your complete file has been transferred to VizSeek servers (the transfer is encrypted).

Client-side Indexing

Client-side indexing means that the desktop app performs the indexing process on your local machine where the app is installed and uploads only the shape signature file to VizSeek servers rather than the complete file. This option is more secure for your files because your original files never leave their original location. The shape signature cannot be used to reverse engineer the design.

However, there are a few important considerations:

  • The client-side indexing version of the desktop app is much larger and will take more space on your machine as well as taking more time to download and install.
  • Indexing is a complex and resource-intensive process. Your initial sync will take a longer time, and we suggest scheduling automatic syncing for a time at off-peak hours.
  • If there is an update to VizSeek’s indexing algorithm, you may need to re-sync all of your files.
  • Your registered users will not be able to download the files from their VizSeek.com account.
  • The online viewer cannot be used for files uploaded with the client-side indexing version of the desktop app.

System Requirements

The VizSeek Desktop app runs on Windows 7 or newer. It also requires the Microsoft .NET 4.0 Framework, but if you don’t have it installed, the VizSeek Desktop installer will add it for you.
